Is CBD Safe? According to a recent NPR spot, “Use of CBD — cannabidiol, the non-psychoactive component in cannabis — has exploded in the last few years. But while it’s marketed as a solution for stress, anxiety, insomnia, and pain, the Food and Drug Administration “can’t” say it’s safe.”
In fact, the FDA has specifically warned 15 companies for illegally selling various products containing cannabidiol as the agency details safety concerns. These warning specifically center around those companies marketing language and claims, around the positive benefits of CBD.
As of late, the FDA has increased its focus on the study of CBD, in reaction to the market’s demand for the product, and increase in popularity amongst consumers. In addition to numerous private studies, as well as a recent Harvard Medical school article “Cannabidiol (CBD) — what we know and what we don’t” which cites CBD’s numerous benefits, clear progress is slow to go for retail CBD manufacturers and federal authorities that establish guidelines. Private studies aside, there are several federal grants offered to evaluate CBD’s potential role in managing anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pain, showing the industry that the FDA is strongly reviewing the health benefits of CBD.
Currently, The FDA has approved Epidiolex, which contains a purified form of the drug substance CBD, for the treatment of seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome in patients 2 years of age and older. However, in general, the FDA has yet to make a clear statement saying that CBD is safe as a product itself. It seems to currently reserve this designation for big Pharma, granting companies in this industry, the ability to tout the many health benefits of CBD.
According to NPR reporter Allison Aubrey, CBD has been in “Regulatory Limbo”. However last year, with federal Hemp regulations lifting, the CBD industry rushed to create the product. All this, with the FDA still resisting comments stating CBD is Safe. However, from the WHO’s research, there is no evidence of negative health-related issues, being derived from CBD products.
